Beach Getaway to Catalina Island

As the daylight savings switches our clock back an hour, delaying our Sunset to a timely 8pm and the California warmth approaches to the perfect 78 degrees, it’s also time for the beach! While Californians can virtually go to the beach 350 days out of the year (when it doesn’t rain), we have been so spoiled by the weather to the point that anything below 70 is a ‘brrr‘ freezing cold. With the Spring blossoms in full bloom and summer approaching, it’s time to pencil in our beach appointments with comrades. Where shall it be? Manhattan Beach? Malibu? Newport?

Another friendly, effortless option for a beach day is hopping on an hour ferry, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, to the cozy and always welcoming, Catalina Island. Many who have been say that it resembles the beaches of the Mediterranean. For those traveling to Southern California should also make a special trip here as much of the island is still preserved to it’s native charm.

Here are some beach photography from my last trip:

Catalina Island is located just 22 miles off the coast of Southern California with 2 main Islands:

Avalon to the south and the rustic village of Two Harbors to the north

Summers are dry and warm.

Ocean water temperature ranges from
the low 70s in the Summertime
to the low 50s in Winter.

And Descanso Beach is where the Day Fiesta & Music is at.

“The air is refreshing, the water is clear,
the community is casual and friendly,
and there’s not one traffic light on the whole Island.”

Whether you’re looking for a beach day with friends, family-fun, romantic weekend or an adventure-filled trip, there is something to do and see for everyone in Santa Catalina: hiking in the back country where 140 Bisons roam, zip lining, golf-carting, biking, parasailing, kayaking, art/culture, hip dining, fun bars and friendly people.

How to Get There

It takes just an hour boat ride which you can catch from the Long Beach, San Pedro or Dana Point port via Catalina Express with 30 daily departure times at approximately $73 roundtrip. On your birthday, you can get a free ferry ride the day of with the purchase of another full-adult fare. I highly recommend upgrading to the Commodore Lounge for just $15 each way for priority boarding, comfortable seating, and a free drink. Other options are via helicopter or to sail over on your own boat!

Either way, Catalina Island is waiting for you.
